Ruins of the Carnegie Mansion

Ruins of the Dungeness Mansion

In the 1880s, the Cumberland Island was bought by Thomas Carnegie, brother of steel industry giant Andrew Carnegie.  Carnegie built this mansion on the island as a winter home and named it “Dungeness” in honor of Nathaniel Greene, previous owner of the island.  After the Great Depression, the island was left vacant and the mansion later burned down in a fire in the year of 1959.

Auf wiedersehen,

Molly & Eric
